Tartar Cleaning (Detertraj)

What is Tartar?

Tartar is a substance caused by bacteria and food residues that accumulate on our teeth and harden over time. It also occurs as a result of the deposition of minerals in saliva on tooth surfaces. Over time, these mineral deposits harden into what is known as “tartar”. Scaling is an important part of maintaining oral health because tartar can harbor bacteria that can cause inflammation of the gums, tooth decay and even tooth loss.

Tartar usually accumulates near the gums, on the back surfaces of the teeth and in the areas between the teeth. Tartar formation is accelerated when oral hygiene is neglected. Neglecting basic oral care such as brushing and flossing can also lead to calculus formation.

Importance of Tartar Removal

Scaling is one of the keys to maintaining oral health and keeping your teeth healthy for a long time. Tartar is not only an aesthetic problem, but can also lead to serious oral diseases.

Some reasons that emphasize the importance of scaling:

1. Gum Diseases (Gingivitis and Periodontitis)

Tartar can cause inflammation of the gums, leading to gum disease such as gingivitis. Gingivitis is characterized by redness, swelling and bleeding of the gums. If left untreated, gum disease can progress to periodontitis, which can lead to more serious problems, including tooth loss.

2. Tooth decay and bad breath

Bacteria that accumulate on tartar can increase the acidity in the mouth, weakening tooth enamel and causing decay. Also, when tartar is not removed, it is easier for bacteria to grow, which causes a bad odor in the mouth.

3. Aesthetic appearance of the tooth

Tartar can cause aesthetically unpleasant yellowing and discoloration, especially on the front teeth. Removing tartar makes teeth look whiter and cleaner.

How to Remove Tartar?

Scaling is a professional procedure usually performed by dentists or dental hygienists. This procedure, which is not recommended to be performed at home, is safer and more effective when performed by specialists.

The steps of the scaling procedure are as follows:

1. Examination and X-ray

The dentist will examine your teeth and gums to determine which areas have calculus deposits. If necessary, x-rays of your teeth will be taken to assess how deep the tartar has gone.

2. Ultrasonic Cleaning

Scaling is usually done with ultrasonic devices. This device emits high-frequency vibrations to remove and clean calculus deposits. Ultrasonic cleaning provides an effective cleaning without damaging the gums.

3. Detailed Cleaning with Hand Tools

After the ultrasonic cleaning, the dentist uses hand instruments to remove any residual tartar on the teeth. This step is important for cleaning in more sensitive areas and around the gums.

4. Polish (Polishing-Scrubbing)

After scaling, teeth are usually smoothed and polished. This makes teeth look brighter and helps to prevent the formation of new tartar.

Benefits of Tartar Removal

  • Protects Oral Health: Helps prevent tartar cleaning, gum diseases and tooth decay.
  • Aesthetic Appearance: Scaling whitens yellowed teeth and provides a more aesthetic appearance.
  • Fresher Breath: Scaling reduces bad breath and provides fresher breath.
  • Prevents Tooth Loss: Scaling helps prevent advanced gum diseases such as periodontitis and therefore prevents tooth loss.
