Prosthesis Applications

What Are Prosthetic Applications?

Prosthetic applications are restorative dentistry methods used to eliminate tooth deficiencies or repair damage to the teeth. Prostheses can be used to replace missing teeth, restore the shape and function of teeth, or make aesthetic improvements. Here are the common types of prosthetic applications:

Full Dentures (Complete Dentures)

They are used in cases where all teeth are missing. They are usually made of acrylic or porcelain material and have a base that covers the palate area underneath. These dentures help edentulous patients regain chewing function and achieve a natural-looking smile aesthetically. Full dentures are carefully designed to distribute pressure over the jawbone and protect the soft tissues.

Partial Dentures

They are used in cases where several teeth are missing. The artificial teeth, made of metal or porcelain, are supported by metal clasps or fixed attachments that anchor to the remaining natural teeth. Partial dentures play an important role in restoring the function of missing teeth while maintaining the movement of natural teeth and the natural shape of the jawbone.

Bridge Prostheses

These are fixed prostheses used to replace missing teeth. They consist of artificial teeth that rely on adjacent natural teeth for support. Typically made of porcelain or ceramic material, they are permanently attached to the natural teeth. Bridge prostheses not only restore chewing function but also provide a natural and aesthetically pleasing smile.

Hybrid Prostheses

These are special prostheses that combine the features of both fixed and removable dentures. They are used in cases where a few teeth are missing. The prosthetic teeth are supported by the remaining natural teeth but can be removed when necessary. Hybrid prostheses combine the durability of fixed prostheses with the comfort of removable ones.

Implant-Supported Prostheses

These prostheses are supported by dental implants. Implants are artificial tooth roots placed into the jawbone. The prosthesis is anchored to the implants, providing a more stable and natural solution. Implant-supported prostheses can be an ideal option for replacing missing teeth and restoring chewing function in a way that closely mimics natural teeth. These prosthetic applications are recommended by dentists depending on the specific needs and conditions of the patient. Each type of prosthesis serves a specific purpose and is designed to improve the patient’s dental health and overall quality of life.
